Take a Break at 2

A lot of people take their coffee break at 2. Some say it breaks up the afternoon. Others think it’s like a nightcap to lunch. Whatever the reason, from today (nov 15) to Sunday between 2-5pm, Starbucks is giving you a BOGO. That’s right, buy one, get one free.

Bring a friend or a coworker and treat them to a freebie. And while you’re there, pick up the free app on the counter which is a recipe and festival planner. By the way, happy diwali to you all.

Long Road to Eden

I haven’t been to a good concert since Stampede when Natasha Beddingfield and July Black rocked the Coca-Cola stage. The last great concert I attended was the Eagles at the Pond in Anaheim (ie. where the Ducks play). They rocked the house and played every oldie you know like Hotel California, Desperado, Take it to the Limit, Take it Easy, Love will keep us together and One of these Nights. My favorite was when the band played Hotel California, huddled at the front of the stage with their guitars and no drums. It was an awesome concert.

After being nominated in this year’s American Music Awards, the Eagles are touring again. The closest venue to us is in Edmonton when they play in March 2009. Tickets don’t get on sale until this Saturday so if you want to see a great concert, I urge you to head down to Ticketmaster and pick up some tickets. Or you can go to their site and get a VIP package but let me warn you, they are expensive. The 4 star treatment goes for $295 per ticket and gives up a seat within the first 20 rows. There’s a bunch of freebies that comes with the price, but to get the full 5 star treatment with pre-concert drinks and dinner, you have to pay $595. If you are interested, go to Eagles and use the tour password: eden.

Other concerts to note is Fleetwood Mac playing at the Air Canada centre in Toronto on March 26, 2009. Tickets go on sale on Monday, Dec 15th but if you have an American Express card then your front of the line access can get you tickets starting tomorrow, Friday Dec 12th.

Shop’n Fly

Forget breakfast central and earn up to 110 aeroplan miles at Sobey’s just by buying the following: Pillsbury Cinnamon rolls and a large jug of Tropicana juice. I did and earned 144 aeroplan miles for under $30 worth of groceries. To join Sobey’s Club, simply fill out an application at your local Sobey’s and you will get a key tag. Scan your key tag every time you shop at Sobey’s and earn points but be sure to elect the option to convert Sobey points to Aeroplan.

Americans across the US are preparing to hit the malls on Friday for Black Friday specials. I’m getting a constant stream of email from my affiliate stores telling me what the deals are and how much savings will be offered. Some stores like RockBottom are already offering 15% off their already low prices but stores like eCost are slashing prices in their bargain countdown section. If you want to buy a Wii for only $99, check back with us and we’ll tell you where you can buy one. They will be in very limited supply but they will be offering one every hour for 10 hours, so 10 of you will be lucky enough to walk away with a Wii for the holidays.

Free Gas

When I woke up today, I knew it was going to be a good day. First of, gas prices were down. At my local gas station, gas was selling at 93.4 cents per litre. Ok, it’s a dead giveaway – if we’re talking about litres then you know it’s in Canada. Some say the pumps dropped down to as little as 85 cents per litre in the east. But in Vancouver, a litre goes for $1.07.

Second, I went out for a brief moment to pick up a leaf blower. I went to my local Canadian Tire store and where they usually keep leaf blowers, weed eaters, flower pots, etc., they now have Christmas paper, lights, trees and decorations. Ok, so I miss the boat on yard cleanup but I still have leaves scattered all over my yard. It’s not going to matter according to the weatherman because he calls for snow. Soon the mess in my yard will be covered up with a white blanket.

Third, the stock market is up. Thanks to the US election, all the markets are up. Gold is up $30. Apple stock is up by $4.03 and the TSX gain more than 400 points this afternoon. There may be a chance for my RSP after all.

For free gas, check this out. Sorry this offer is only good in Canada.

Turkey Santa Needs a Car

It’s almost time to rent a car for the big Thanksgiving trek if you live in the US and for Christmas if you are heading out of town. First of, lets start with Dollar. Use coupon code: 8CMCA to save 15% off a premium, luxury, midsize SUV or a standard SUV from a Southern California location such as San Diego, Palm Springs, Ontario or Los Angeles Airport. Also at Dollar, you can rent a car from select locations for only $1 per day but you will have to drop it off at a participating location with no drop fee. For example, take a car from Chicago and drive to Miami for only a $1 per day then pay no drop-off fee when you get to Miami. That’s a fantastic deal. If you are interested, check out the list by clicking here.

Some people rather not fuss with promo codes and coupons when renting a car. If you’re one of those, go to Orbitz. With Orbitz, you will get a pretty good rate but read the fine print if you plan to cancel. Did you read my last blogs on renting a car for Palm Springs? Up to the last week of travel, I booked and cancelled my car until I was paying about $100 less than my first booking. This you can only do, if you booked it directly with one of the car rental agencies. With Orbitz, HotWire, CarRental – you might have to pay a penalty so watch out.

Halloween for Free Seekers

Tonight might not be a good night because the skies are cloudy and the ghosts and goblins will be out in full force. It’s Halloween and tonight is a Friday’s night. Perhaps, next Friday when the skies are clear you can take your kids down to the Telus World of Science and stargaze for free.

But if you’re looking to be creeped out and you’re in Vancouver, visit the Dunbar Haunted House. Admission is free but please bring a donation. There is a list of good charities to donate to.

Today is the last day to buy Halloween Gift Certificates from the City of Calgary Recreation. These gift certificates give the little ghouls a FREE SWIM. The cost of the certificates is $5.00 for a booklet of 10. If you’re looking for free public skating, mark your calendars for November 11th and check your City of Calgary Recreation website for a local rink.

McDonald’s is offering Halloween certificates at $1 per booklet which entitles kids to a free small cone. Wendy’s has a similiar booklet, entitling kids to a small frosty.

Drive carefully tonight and watch out for the little ghosts, goblins and ghoulies.

Rain, Rain Go Away

Here’s another episode to an earlier blog that I wrote titled ‘Braving the Elements’. If you are going to play golf in the rain, be sure you have enough rain gear to be comfortable and to play a decent game. There isn’t a lot to say about rain pants, except that it has to be easy to put on and is waterproof. Be careful not to shop for one that is simply, water resistant. You need one that has a breathable mesh inside to protect your (dry) pants from the moisture that seeps through. Don’t just think of nylon or canvas to keep the rain out. A cotton lining will not help neither. Sun Ice Typhoon or Columbia rain pants do well.

Second, you will need at least three layers for the main trunk. If you know about the Ashworth 3-layer concept, follow that. If not, here are some tips. The first layer will consist of a golf shirt or a mock turtleneck. Stay within dress code limits of the golf course you are playing on. Next, bring along a warmer layer such as a pullover, sweater or fleece top. This layer will keep your body and arms warm. The outer layer needs to be waterproof. Again, a water resistant layer will not suffice. This layer needs to protect you from the rain, sleet and wind. Make sure you choose one that zips up and protects your neck.

Last, don’t forget your gloves. FootJoy has winter and rain gloves. Wilson Prostaff has a pair of rain gloves that begins to work when it gets wet. Get a pair of these and put it in your bag for an emergency downpour or if you choose to play in the rain.

Most golf shoes are waterproof except sandals and CROCS. Other accessories may include rain covers for your bag, umbrella for your clubs and a rain shield for your power cart. And if all fails, go for a rain check.
