Stocks are down but you’re not

Today’s stock market was down because there is no consumer confidence on spending. Hmmm, I guess it doesn’t include me as I have been shopping online since January. I think this is a buyer’s market. Everyone in the right mind is saving their money except moi who is buying up things – anything that is a good deal!

Today I bought myself a pair of shoes and bought my wife one too. Have you ever heard about Teva? If you shop at REI or some mountain store, you will most likely see brands like Merrell, Keen and Teva. Like all these recreational shoes, Teva can be quite pricey. But I did say this is a buyer’s market so here’s the deal. Click here and take a look at what is on sale at Teva. Believe it or not, they are selling some cool shoes as low as $19.90.

Shipping is $5.95 per shoe but if you sign up to receive their emails, they will send you a code that you can use (instantly) to get free shipping.

Luggage Clubs

Most of the time I blog about deals, specials and the BBD. That’s why alot of you keep visiting me because of the BBD. But today, I am going to blog about something that is definitely not the BBD because I think uPay2much for this service if you use it.

Have you heard of the Luggage Club? It is for travellers who don’t want to fuss with lugging their sports equipment all over the world. You pay a fee to transport your golf clubs, surfboard, kayak, skis, boots, racquets, duffle bag, etc. to a destination of your choice. It’s a door to door delivery, I think.

I was curious to check out the prices to transport two golf bags to Orlando, Florida from Seattle, Washington and back. The fee is $1,040 for next morning delivery. Next afternoon delivery will save me $33 and if I’m willing to wait 6 days for it, I can get it for $686. The prices to send my clubs to Orlando is almost the price of an air ticket.

I can see if you’re a sports professional and don’t want the hassle of carrying your gear onboard but if you get paid to play sports then you can afford this service. Or if you planning a kayak trip or a cycling trip then paying to have your equipment delivered may make sense. But sending a duffle bag, stroller or even golf bags is a little ridiculous.

I’ll gladly pay $25 surcharge to US Airways to bring a second bag than to pay a luggage club to deliver my goods. If you’re interested, check out Luggage Club and here’s a coupon for you to save some money: THRIFTY.

Don’t Give Blood

Something is wrong when you get more mosquito bites than number of pars on a golf course. Someone told me once that bugs know when bad weather is arriving. As far as mosquitos are concerned, they want their last meal before the rain comes. They may know something we do not, like for instance, that rain washes away the insect repellent on our skin and leaving us vulnerable.

I started looking at insect repellent clothing by ExOfficio. Their clothing is impregnated with insect repellent that prevents insects from biting you. Sounds good? It did to me too but I looked into it some more and found that it is only good for 25 washings. If you are the type that sweats a lot then you will be washing it almost daily. That means if you golf (or hike) twice a week, you will wash this out in 3 months. We do carry a link on our website if you want to check out their eco-friendly clothing or their Buzz Off line. It is alittle expensive for my taste but they do have a clearance sale from time to time.

As golfers, we have a dress code to upkeep when we play golf. You won’t find a golf shirt or windshirt in ExOfficio’s insect repellent line. But you will find long sleeve shirts that will keep you cool and bug-free. They also have a visor and cap that a golfer can buy. Mosquitos do find their way under the brim for a meal so take a look at these accessories that can help save your blood.

Spiderwick Fans

With Canada Day around the corner, celebrations are popping up left and right. Everything seems to be on sale and if you know where to shop, you can get some of the best deals this time of year. Coast Mountain Sports has a sale starting Wednesday and goes to July 7th. You can get a free car top carrier kit valued at $29.95 if you buy an Atlantic Kayak. Also, you can buy an Outbound sleeping bag for $29.95 and get one free. If you’re sold on my earlier blog on Keen sandals, check out the Venice H2 or Newport H2 sandals for only $89.99.

Anyone looking for an iPod speaker system? Superstore has the Boynq speaker system that normally sells at $79.99 for only $39.99. You have a choice of pink or black. I checked out the iHome products at Winner’s this weekend and found that they still have the iHome2Go speakers for $49.99.

And to all Spiderwick’s fans, the DVD hits store shelves tomorrow. If you pick it up, be sure to get it at Superstore or Future Shop for $19.99 or less. Don’t upay2much.

Flying into YYC

I figured that there are a lot of people visiting the Stampede this year. Believe it or not, it’s just around the corner. Instead of digging their spurs in, alot of Calgarians like to leave town during this time. They find it too rowdy and rather spend it elsewhere. It’s hardly a reason to leave town, considering it’s quiet most of the year in Calgary. Why not stay and welcome the visitors?

I’ve seen Jeff Goldblum come into Calgary and stay out in Banff. He prefers the privacy and serenity out in the Rockies than the bustling oil town that Calgary is known as. If you plan to stay in Canmore or Banff, try to book a hotel online before getting here.

If you want to explore the Rockies, I recommend that you rent a car from the airport. Even if you plan on camping or gamping, a car will allow you to get to some of the hidden gems in the Rockies. You can drive out to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake and marvel at the beauty of the lakes. You can drive further west to Emerald Lake and canoe on perfectly still waters. You can drive northwest to the Columbia Ice Fields where the glacier once occupied over the highway. To save you money, we have coupons, promo codes and discounts for car rentals with Budget, Alamo, Hertz, Thrifty’s and Avis. Take your pick.

For hotels, I recommend staying at Falcon Crest in Canmore and in Banff, I like the old Fairmont Banff Springs hotel or the Rimrock. Be sure to try out the all-u-can-eat buffet breakfast at the Banff Springs hotel every Sunday – make reservations!

If you plan to golf in Kananaskis, you can stay at the Delta hotel or you can camp at several campsites in the area. Unfortunately, if you don’t already have tee times there, you can play at twilight and save yourself some money. If you are going further to explore Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, plan to stay at the Chateau Lake Louise.

Is Gamping for You?

I miss sleeping in the great outdoors when we used to camp along the lower lakes in Kananaskis Country. We used to drive out every long weekend and stake out a piece of real estate, hang up our tarps to protect us from the rain and setup camp. We would bring the cooler out, stocked full of marinated chicken and steaks, potatoes wrapped in foil and bags of frozen corn. These days, we go cruising on long weekends, at least for the May long weekend coming up.

I hear camping isn’t as popular as it used to. I know for us, we prefer to stay at the Falcon Crest Lodge in nearby Canmore and eat at our favorite restaurants such as Crazyweed and French Quarter, a cajun and creole hangout. We would golf at Stewart Creek and SilverTip and stroll into Banff when we want to go shopping.

Has anybody heard of ‘gamping’? It stands for ‘glamorous camping’ and it is on the rise. For $595 a night, you get a personal chef, a maid to turn up the heated comforter and a camp butler to build the fire. For $110 per person per day, you get luxury food such as bison rib-eye steak for dinner and french toast topped with huckleberries for breakfast. If you’re interested, I hear the Paws Up resort in Big Sky, Montana is the most popular.

If ‘gamping’ sounds good to you but you don’t want to spend $595 per night, you can still add some luxury and comfort to your camping supplies. Buy yourself a heated sleeping bag. Equipped with a 12V DC battery, it will keep you warm for 8 hours. Its rated for temperatures as low as -27 degrees celsius, is waterproof and weighs 11 pounds. To light up your way, lose your Coleman lantern and get a solar tent from Canadian Tire that comes with an integrated solar panel that lights the interior LED lights and can be used to charge devices (such as your iPods, blackberries and laptops) independently.
