Today’s stock market was down because there is no consumer confidence on spending. Hmmm, I guess it doesn’t include me as I have been shopping online since January. I think this is a buyer’s market. Everyone in the right mind is saving their money except moi who is buying up things – anything that is a good deal!

Today I bought myself a pair of shoes and bought my wife one too. Have you ever heard about Teva? If you shop at REI or some mountain store, you will most likely see brands like Merrell, Keen and Teva. Like all these recreational shoes, Teva can be quite pricey. But I did say this is a buyer’s market so here’s the deal. Click here and take a look at what is on sale at Teva. Believe it or not, they are selling some cool shoes as low as $19.90.

Shipping is $5.95 per shoe but if you sign up to receive their emails, they will send you a code that you can use (instantly) to get free shipping.

Getting Tee’d off December 22, 2008

I am getting tee’d off with car rental agencies. Why specify a car size when you are reserving because 9-out-of-10 times, you don’t get what you reserved for. I didn’t when I tried to pick up my compact car from Alamo inVancouver. I ended up with a Charger – a full size vehicle that has rear wheel drive and was totally useless in snow. I ended up going back to the airport the next day to trade it in for a compact car.

If you had read my earlier blogs on the Calgary Stampede, you would have noticed that we feature some of the biggest stars on stage for free. This year we had July Black and Natasha Beddingfield that performed on the Coca-Cola stage. With an admission to the Stampede, these concerts were free.

Click here for the 2009 Stampede and enter the password: insider to get 15% off tickets. Taylor Swift is one of the performers at the Saddledome. As soon as I find out who is playing on the Coca-Cola stage, I will let you know.

A long weekend is coming up fast and everyone I know is heading out for their last getaway before school starts. The weather doesn’t sound good neither, with a cool down coming our way by Friday night. Believe it or not, by Sunday, it’s going to be a cool 12 degrees celsius. And Monday isn’t much better.

I’m getting itchy feet and have scoured the travel websites for a last minute deal. Here’s what I found:

1. R/T to London from Calgary or Vancouver for $755. Slightly cheaper for Toronto and Montreal at $585. With British Airways, you get a 2-day London Pass for free, allowing you to visit Kensington Palace and London Tower and more.

2. Calgary to Puerto Vallarta for only $99. With taxes, it comes out to $427.

3. Calgary to Puerto Vallarta, all-inclusive for 1 week at $548.

4. Toronto to Orlando, return for only $28. With taxes, it comes out to $210 but you have to pack your bags and leave on Saturday.

And talking about itchy feet, we have a new affiliate Shoes.com and they have all the shoes that I like – Keen, Merrell, Skechers and more. You can expect to see my favorites reviewed on our site in the next few days.

I was cleaning out my golf bag today and came upon some ball markers that I picked up along the way. I have markers from Riviera in the Pacific Palisades where some of you may have heard about ‘Hogan’s Alley’. I picked up these gems when I attended the Nissan Open and walked alongside with Tiger Woods, Mike Weir and John Daly. I even got some autographs at the putting green.

I haven’t been to a major golf tournament but I have friends who have attended the Masters and the PGA Championship. They say it is awesome to be among the crowd and to walk with your favorite players. I think it is the atmosphere and the inspiration that you come away with. It elevates your game after you have experienced the event and have seen their fluid swing.

Watching golf on television has its limitations but there are advantages as well. For example, if you watched the Barclay tournament last weekend, you might have noticed the Lending Tree ad. Depending upon your loan amount, you can earn free Callaway equipment or free golf rounds. For example, if you borrow $100,000 you will receive a $250 gift card for Callaway golf or $250 worth of golf rounds. With a maximum of $750, you can get new irons and one of those new Warbird Hot golf bags to hold the clubs.

My friends are sailing today on the Carnival Freedom from Rome. I google’d the ship and found a webcam located on the bridge and on the aft of the ship. The weather looked great in Civitavecchia where their cruise ship is docked. No one including me, would have guessed that the port terminal was located so far from city center. Taking a cab from Rome seemed to take forever, almost reaching the airport then taking a northernly route to Civitavecchia.

They promised they would visit the Vatican City and see the Sistine Chapel. I doubt they would have ventured out to see the Trevi fountain, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, Colloseum and the Roman forum. Perhaps, all of that would have been covered by the day tour they took. Even that, it would have been a stretch to see all these sights in a day tour. I have been to Rome twice and have never seen the Colloseum up close. The one thing I was happy to see the last time I was there was the Pantheon.

I’m currently reading a book titled the Secret History of the Roman Emperors by Anthony Blond. I’ve always been fascinated about the topic and wanted to read something about the Romans. Some of these emperors were pretty ruthless and it helps put a meaning to my travel photos that I took of the Roman forum.

Looking for a great cruise to go on? Check out Royal Caribbean Brilliance of the Seas, sailing on November 13th for 12 nights. At $899 for an interior cabin, it comes to out to $74.92 per night. That’s a pretty good deal for accomodations, at least 3 meals a day, snacks, sports and entertainment.

Do you live in a neighborhood where every other house is getting re-roofed? I do. My roofing guys had just finished off the remaining shingles on Monday and they are now invoicing me. They left a mess on my driveway and there are unused supplies still sitting there. I have called the main number and told them to pick it up but they deferred it to the end of the week. It is at the end of the week and guess what? It’s still sitting there. Anyone need a recommendation? Well, don’t expect me to recommend Rush Roofing anytime soon. My wife thinks they should change their name to Non-Rush Roofing.

They also promised me they were going to install WeatherWatch on my eaves and valleys for free. However when the delivery truck arrived at my doorsteps, I went over the packing slip and did not find the WeatherWatch material anywhere. Unless you know what to look for or dare to climb up to the roof with them, you have no guarantee to what they have installed (or not).

There has been a lot of talk on the golf course about playing on the island, Vancouver Island that is. Some friends of mine just got back from Parksville and they had played Crown Isle. Mark was disappointed for two reasons, one being that he paid over $150 for a round and second, he had lost a bucket of balls to the long grass. Mark is not a big hitter nor does he have a high trajectory in his irons.

Until September 13th, pay $275 per person from Monday thru Thursday and stay and play for 2 nights and 2 rounds at Arbutus Ridge and Olympic View on the island. If you want to play the weekend, pay just $10 more per person. And get a free $50 gas card for each twosome, $100 for a foursome and up to $250 if more than 4. Supplies are limited so book early. Call 1-888-465-3239.

You can check out all the golf courses on the island by booking the Vancouver Island Golf Trail. For only $799 per person, you get 6 nights and 6 rounds in a choice of three of the following regions: Victoria, Cowichan Valley, Parksville and Qualicum and the North Island. Guaranteed tee times, power carts and a great time awaits you.

Some of you may know that we are wrapping up our charity event. It was last Sunday and we had successfully raised over $12,000 for cancer research. We chose to donate all our pledges and proceeds from our silent auction to the Canadian Cancer Society. That’s my good deed for the summer.

This week, I am sending out thank you’s to our sponsors who were gracious enough to donate items to our silent auction. Our sponsors were fantastic to say the least. One of the best ones include Callaway Golf Canada who donated a Callaway Warbird Hot Stand Bag and a case of Tour balls. That’s what I expected Golf Town to do but read my blog on ‘No Charity at Golf Town’. As a result, I am still not shopping there.

Another set of letters that I am sending out is to our players who were dedicated to collecting pledges for our cause. They collected over $10,000 in pledges from their coworkers, friends and family. I like to thank you them by sending a small token of appreciation which will include a Bernard Callebaut coupon for 2 ice cream treats, a Cancer ‘blue’ bracelet and a set of 20 custom club shaft labels.

I am also sending them a coupon code to save $10 on their next $25 purchase from GolfBalls. If you would like this code, you can pick it up from our site.
