My heart goes out to all of you who are stuck at the airport. Wherever you are, have a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for the holidays. Be safe and keep warm if you’re among the millions who are travelling home for the holidays.

Before I sign off for Christmas, I like to share with you, a promo code for Air Canada. It’s only good until boxing day, December 26th that is. You know that our American friends don’t know what Boxing Day is?! It’s true. Chock up another one as 5-pin bowling is an alien sport in the US as well. The promo code is GF6V9EW1. Enter this on their website for an extra 15% off. You can travel up until May 2009 so you have plenty of time to use it but you have to book it before the 26th of December.

Also, follow this link and get $1 off your next $20 purchase at Rexall.

Until next time, take care and have yourself a very Merry Christmas!

Getting Tee’d off December 22, 2008

I am getting tee’d off with car rental agencies. Why specify a car size when you are reserving because 9-out-of-10 times, you don’t get what you reserved for. I didn’t when I tried to pick up my compact car from Alamo inVancouver. I ended up with a Charger – a full size vehicle that has rear wheel drive and was totally useless in snow. I ended up going back to the airport the next day to trade it in for a compact car.

If you had read my earlier blogs on the Calgary Stampede, you would have noticed that we feature some of the biggest stars on stage for free. This year we had July Black and Natasha Beddingfield that performed on the Coca-Cola stage. With an admission to the Stampede, these concerts were free.

Click here for the 2009 Stampede and enter the password: insider to get 15% off tickets. Taylor Swift is one of the performers at the Saddledome. As soon as I find out who is playing on the Coca-Cola stage, I will let you know.

I haven’t been to a good concert since Stampede when Natasha Beddingfield and July Black rocked the Coca-Cola stage. The last great concert I attended was the Eagles at the Pond in Anaheim (ie. where the Ducks play). They rocked the house and played every oldie you know like Hotel California, Desperado, Take it to the Limit, Take it Easy, Love will keep us together and One of these Nights. My favorite was when the band played Hotel California, huddled at the front of the stage with their guitars and no drums. It was an awesome concert.

After being nominated in this year’s American Music Awards, the Eagles are touring again. The closest venue to us is in Edmonton when they play in March 2009. Tickets don’t get on sale until this Saturday so if you want to see a great concert, I urge you to head down to Ticketmaster and pick up some tickets. Or you can go to their site and get a VIP package but let me warn you, they are expensive. The 4 star treatment goes for $295 per ticket and gives up a seat within the first 20 rows. There’s a bunch of freebies that comes with the price, but to get the full 5 star treatment with pre-concert drinks and dinner, you have to pay $595. If you are interested, go to Eagles and use the tour password: eden.

Other concerts to note is Fleetwood Mac playing at the Air Canada centre in Toronto on March 26, 2009. Tickets go on sale on Monday, Dec 15th but if you have an American Express card then your front of the line access can get you tickets starting tomorrow, Friday Dec 12th.

Forget breakfast central and earn up to 110 aeroplan miles at Sobey’s just by buying the following: Pillsbury Cinnamon rolls and a large jug of Tropicana juice. I did and earned 144 aeroplan miles for under $30 worth of groceries. To join Sobey’s Club, simply fill out an application at your local Sobey’s and you will get a key tag. Scan your key tag every time you shop at Sobey’s and earn points but be sure to elect the option to convert Sobey points to Aeroplan.

Americans across the US are preparing to hit the malls on Friday for Black Friday specials. I’m getting a constant stream of email from my affiliate stores telling me what the deals are and how much savings will be offered. Some stores like RockBottom are already offering 15% off their already low prices but stores like eCost are slashing prices in their bargain countdown section. If you want to buy a Wii for only $99, check back with us and we’ll tell you where you can buy one. They will be in very limited supply but they will be offering one every hour for 10 hours, so 10 of you will be lucky enough to walk away with a Wii for the holidays.

Free Gas November 4, 2008

When I woke up today, I knew it was going to be a good day. First of, gas prices were down. At my local gas station, gas was selling at 93.4 cents per litre. Ok, it’s a dead giveaway – if we’re talking about litres then you know it’s in Canada. Some say the pumps dropped down to as little as 85 cents per litre in the east. But in Vancouver, a litre goes for $1.07.

Second, I went out for a brief moment to pick up a leaf blower. I went to my local Canadian Tire store and where they usually keep leaf blowers, weed eaters, flower pots, etc., they now have Christmas paper, lights, trees and decorations. Ok, so I miss the boat on yard cleanup but I still have leaves scattered all over my yard. It’s not going to matter according to the weatherman because he calls for snow. Soon the mess in my yard will be covered up with a white blanket.

Third, the stock market is up. Thanks to the US election, all the markets are up. Gold is up $30. Apple stock is up by $4.03 and the TSX gain more than 400 points this afternoon. There may be a chance for my RSP after all.

For free gas, check this out. Sorry this offer is only good in Canada.

Tonight might not be a good night because the skies are cloudy and the ghosts and goblins will be out in full force. It’s Halloween and tonight is a Friday’s night. Perhaps, next Friday when the skies are clear you can take your kids down to the Telus World of Science and stargaze for free.

But if you’re looking to be creeped out and you’re in Vancouver, visit the Dunbar Haunted House. Admission is free but please bring a donation. There is a list of good charities to donate to.

Today is the last day to buy Halloween Gift Certificates from the City of Calgary Recreation. These gift certificates give the little ghouls a FREE SWIM. The cost of the certificates is $5.00 for a booklet of 10. If you’re looking for free public skating, mark your calendars for November 11th and check your City of Calgary Recreation website for a local rink.

McDonald’s is offering Halloween certificates at $1 per booklet which entitles kids to a free small cone. Wendy’s has a similiar booklet, entitling kids to a small frosty.

Drive carefully tonight and watch out for the little ghosts, goblins and ghoulies.

Of all the ports in Europe that we sailed to on our Mediterranean cruise last year, we were most impressed when we arrived in Barcelona. The city is pretty hip with historic districts, unfinished masterpieces such as the Sagrada Familia church by Gaudi and the shopping district along Passieg de Gracia.

Sailing this fall is RCCL’s Brilliance of the Seas and at $43 per night, the December sailing will surely sell out. It sails from Barcelona to Malaga then to Funchal, Portugal before visiting Las Palmas and the Canary Islands for 14-nights. After a day at sea, it stops at Casablanca, Lisbon and Cardiz before cruising back to Barcelona. When it sails to Lisbon, the ship stays for two nights, allowing passengers to visit Lisbon at night and enjoy live music, discos, bars and clubs.

Two of the most beautiful squares of the capital, Praça do Rossio and Praça da Figueira, are surrounded by some of the most elegant shops of the city, from Rua Augusta to Praça do Comércio. The best thing to do is to treat yourself to a panoramic view of the city by taking the Santa Justa elevator. It will take you directly to the “Convento do Carmo”, an ancient church of which only the walls remain today. It is a pleasant museum to wonder through.

Learn some Spanish before you go. Exchange for some euros and pack light.

I’m sure the drinks onboard will be Sangria.

Ladies, mark your calendar for October 27th as four distinguished women come to stage to inspire you and to be your successful role models in health, career, family and financial. It is the Secrets of Today’s Modern Woman show at the Jubilee.  Who is coming? Ivana Trump, Jane Seymour, Leslie Beck and Linda Nazareth. You have to click on my link above, otherwise you can’t access the promo page where you need to enter the code word.

Guys, do you want Callaway clubs? Kananaskis golf is selling off their rental clubs but you have to hurry. Call (403) 591-7088 ext. 321 for prices, availability and to get your name on the wait list. The sale began as early as August but when I was out there at the end of August, they still had a few sets left.

Golf courses all over Calgary are in great shape and with the Indian Summer ahead of us, it looks like there won’t be a slowdown anytime soon. Courses are offering end of season plays so if you are looking for unlimited golf, look to:

1. Carstairs – Unlimited golf for $239 from now to end of season. If you buy a 2009 membership, you can deduct this off next year’s dues.

2. River’s Edge Golf Club – Unlimited golf for $275 from now to end of season. If you buy a 2009 Executive Membership, you can deduct this off the 2009 fees.

More to come as the 2008 season winds down.

My friends tell me that Corteo, a Cirque du Soleil show that is rolling through Calgary is the best they have ever seen. And they have seen them all from A to Z, that is Allegria to Zumanity. I’m not sure if I want to see a funeral but then Cirque du Soleil does make its shows entertaining. Corteo means “cortege” in Italian, a festive parade imagined by a clown. It’s about a clown imagining his own funeral, but in a carnival setting and caring angels look on.

Corteo leaves Calgary on September 7th so there are a few weeks left in its schedule. Unfortunately for me, all my friends and relatives have already seen it and they had loved it. You can see the Big Top as your drive by the Currie Barracks in Calgary or the huge traffic jams on Crowchild Trail when you pass by in the weekends.

If you haven’t seen it and want to, I can forward you an invite to join their Cirque Club. Once joined, you have access to the best seats in the house, before they become public. And at a discount too. For instance, I can buy tickets to Corteo for 30% off. That’s practically paying children prices for adult seats.

Some of you may know that we are wrapping up our charity event. It was last Sunday and we had successfully raised over $12,000 for cancer research. We chose to donate all our pledges and proceeds from our silent auction to the Canadian Cancer Society. That’s my good deed for the summer.

This week, I am sending out thank you’s to our sponsors who were gracious enough to donate items to our silent auction. Our sponsors were fantastic to say the least. One of the best ones include Callaway Golf Canada who donated a Callaway Warbird Hot Stand Bag and a case of Tour balls. That’s what I expected Golf Town to do but read my blog on ‘No Charity at Golf Town’. As a result, I am still not shopping there.

Another set of letters that I am sending out is to our players who were dedicated to collecting pledges for our cause. They collected over $10,000 in pledges from their coworkers, friends and family. I like to thank you them by sending a small token of appreciation which will include a Bernard Callebaut coupon for 2 ice cream treats, a Cancer ‘blue’ bracelet and a set of 20 custom club shaft labels.

I am also sending them a coupon code to save $10 on their next $25 purchase from GolfBalls. If you would like this code, you can pick it up from our site.
