As you all may know that I am organizing a charity golf tournament to raise money towards cancer research. To help out, I have been sending people to Golf Plus on Macleod Trail to buy their golf equipment so they can donate it to our silent auction. With a discount, they end up buying two of everything – one to donate to us and one they keep for themselves.
If you are interested in doing this, post a comment or send me an email to cure@goplaygolf.com and I will reply with a promo code that you need to get special pricing.

Does anyone want to support my charity drive for cancer? If so, please make a pledge to cure@goplaygolf.com where I will reply with my address so you can send me your cheque. If you donate more than $20, you will get a tax receipt from the Cancer Society. If you donate generously, I will send you a Cancer blue bracelet, similiar to Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong (yellow) band. I will even include some fridge magnets if you specify your choice of color: blue, green, orange or purple. Don’t worry about giving me your email address or home address. I will not spam you. The Cancer Society will need your address to send your tax receipt to. We have until August 10th to reach our goal of $10,000. So please give generously.
I went to Future Shop on Macleod Trail yesterday and saw a good supply of Wii Mario Kart. If you want to have fun driving a kart or a motorbike then you will love Mario Kart. You might want to wait until tomorrow when Future Shop has a sale on Mario Kart for $44.99, a $5 saving. Also, the Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy games for the Wii are $44.99.
It is my favorite game so far. If you don’t have a Wii yet, you might want to visit our site because eCost had 3 consoles left earlier today.
Also I dropped in to Liquidation World, located just behind Future Shop. They had brand new Maytag front loading washers for sale at $500 each. Too bad my washer still works, otherwise I would love to get one of these cool blue washers. They save water and are more efficient than the old top loading ones.

As a follow up to my earlier blog on ‘It Pays to be a Kid Again’, here’s a coupon for your kids to get in free to the Aero Space Museum in Calgary. And if you don’t live here but plan to visit, be sure to bring your golf clubs and stay at the Coast Plaza Hotel. For $210, you get a Coast Comfort Room and two rounds of golf at Lakeside Greens in Chestermere. It’s a nice course to play on but bring your insurance if you can’t control your ball and tend to spray them because in some holes, there are houses that come into play.
Get a free power cart on your next round of golf using this coupon at the Canals at Delacour. To get there, drive east on Country Hills Blvd for about 25 minutes. The Canals course is a links style course with very little trees and undulating fairways.

I had a tee time this morning to play with my regulars at Shaw-Nee Slopes but at the first sign of rain, I wimped out. On days like this, I rather sit back with my favorite cup of tea and surf the internet. Today I stumbled upon a unique website. After signing up, you get paid for filling out surveys, entering contests and playing sweepstakes. For example, they will pay you $3 and give you 2-nights accomodation for joining their Family Saver Club. They are hoping that within 14 days of joining their club that you will not be able to resist their incredible vacation prices. And the prices look pretty good to me.
You can sign up to win a Land Rover LR2 SUV. For that, you get paid $1. Or sign up with CoolSavings and get paid 62 cents. The list goes on. Why not get paid for surfing the internet? Visit our site where the link is listed under the “Want to Make Money” heading.

I have my reservations when it comes to refurbished items. There is a new word they use now, recertified and they are not talking about preowned BMW’s but electronic products such as computers, vacumn cleaners, coffee makers and much more. My Roomba stopped working properly last week so I returned it to where I purchased it, XS Cargo in the Northeast. Luckily I bought extended warranty for it because there was only 90 days of warranty with a recertified Roomba. The extended warranty cost me $29.95 and extended it for 2 years.
As you can expect, they try to put up a fight, persuading me to bring it home and to try it again. I refused. The manager watched me demo the defective Roomba in front of her and said that she has one and it behaved exactly like hers. I told her that I had owned three Roomba’s in the last ten years and know that a normally functioning unit does not circle round and round, vacumning a two feet circle. She tried to pull a fast one on me, telling me that when the Roomba detects a very dirty spot, it will stay there for a long time. Roomba does have a feature like that but a blue LED lights up when it detects a dirt intensive area.
I did not back down. At the end, she exchanged the defective Roomba with a lesser model. I was furious. The extended warranty does state that they will try to replace the unit with an equivalent model. Unfortunately, they did not have any units that resembled what I had. After complaining, they gave me a $30 credit which I used towards a new extended warranty plan. By the way, the extended warranty plan terminates when you claim the warranty.
The moral of the story is avoid purchasing anything that can break at XS Cargo. That includes a lot of things such as vacumn cleaners, car stereos, digital cameras, telephones, appliances and more. If you cannot refuse their prices then make sure you put on your boxing gloves when you have to return your purchase.

Our friends are back from their Parksville and Qualicum Beach stay and they had a great time. Every year they head out and have a grand old time doing beach activities and shopping for real estate. They said it is a buyer’s market out there with lots to choose from. An average single family home in Parksville sells for $350,000 but there are a lot of condos and beach cottages available for the part time vacationer.
I stumbled upon a coupon for 50% off at Prestige Inn and Resort in B.C. If you are thinking about heading out to Radium Springs, you might want to get this coupon and stay at the Prestige Inn, located about 2 blocks from the Radium Springs golf course. It sits on the corner where you turn off the highway and head south to Fairmont. I did an early blog about the Italian restaurant in the Prestige Inn, recommending the great greek salad there. The hotel is well situated with several golf courses nearby. Copper Point, Eagle Ranch and Radium Springs golf courses to name a few.
To get the coupon, visit WiseResearch and fill out a survey that will take 15-20 minutes of your time. It is worth it because you get a 50% coupon off your next stay at Prestige Inn. If you don’t plan to stay there then get a voucher for Caribbean travel or Discover Islands.

I wish we could find a way to lessen the fuel costs so we can get back to traveling around the country. I have a promo code for you to use to access Marriott Hotels and Resorts Exclusive Breaks which are last minute weekend rates at various locations. For example, you can stay in Louisiana Baton Rouge from $63 to $87 per night. Or go to Edmonton and stay at the Marriott for $143 per night. To book, go the Marriott site directly and enter MEB as the promo code.
I also have a promo code that will save you 20% off all hotel stays from Orbitz. You will have to visit us for this one. Sorry.
If you are in the market for a Taylor Made Burner 460 Ti driver, you might as well get a free umbrella with it at TGW. And if you don’t mind playing with 2-year old balls, the 2006 Nike One balls are selling at $24.95. I’m sure they play just as well as the 2008 model but you might have to shake the dust off these gems.
This Week’s Flyers July 27, 2008

There is a Michael’s flyer in the latest batch of flyers out this week. In it, you can find the 40% off coupon that I wrote about in an earlier blog. Here’s your chance to pick up more art supplies or t-shirts. SportMart is advertising a huge clearance in golf equipment. But the only name brand you will find there is Taylor Made. No Titleist, Callaway, Cobra nor Ping. I think they have slashed their prices by 20% off. And if you’re into Keen sandals or Merrell hiking shoes, Sole Comfort is having a 60% off sale to get rid of all its summer shoes. They have locations in Westhills and MarketMall.
Air conditioners that sold out last year in Calgary are in an abundance this year. Home Depot and Sears have slashed their prices by $20 to $40. This could also mean that homeowners are choosing central air conditioning for their homes. If so, the Kenmore line of air conditioners are on sale this week.

When guests arrive, I offer them a drink. I have all the varieties of soft drinks and juices in my fridge. I’m known as the beverage king when it comes to offering my friends a drink. This week, I tried three new drinks: Sunkist Lemon, Calamansi and Freez Lime. Since visiting Barcelona last fall, I’ve been wanting a Fanta Lemon for the longest time. Sunkist Lemon comes close but it’s not quite the same. I got introduced to Calamansi when I was in Hawaii. There you will find all the Aloha drinks and Hawaiian Sun juices such as Passionfruit & Pineapple or Guava and Orange. If you haven’t tried Calamansi and you like the flavor of lime then you will like this juice. You won’t find it at your local Sobey’s or Safeway, not even Co-op. The place you need to go to is T&T in the Northeast.
Freez is a brand that comes from Lebanon. It comes in a variety of flavors such as Lemon, Kiwi, Blackberry, Mandarin Orange and Lime. My favorite so far is Lime. A bottle of Freez sells for $2.00 but if you buy a whole case (of 24), you pay only $20 including deposit. Anyone interested in buying Freez, drop me a comment and I will list the address of the place to buy it.
Crawfish in the City July 25, 2008

You know I crave Louisiana food. My favorite is still Crawfish Etoufee but Creole Shrimp and Chicken Gumbo is not far behind. I’ve heard from a friend of mine that Booker’s in downtown Calgary has crawfish and other cajun dishes. If that’s true then I’m going to have to try it. For now, I will drive for 45 minutes to Canmore to get my fix at French Quarter’s.
Today I went hunting for crawfish. Believe it or not, I tracked down a place in Calgary where you can buy frozen crawfish meat. The place is called City Fish and it is located on 27th Street in the Northeast. The exact address is 3515 – 27th Street NE but please call ahead first. They are a wholesale distributor and don’t normally sell to retail. I called and asked for crawfish and ended up reserving a box of cooked crawfish and a package of crawfish tail meat. The box of crawfish sells for $7 per pound and comes cooked in cajun juices. There are 3 pounds in each box and averages about 35 to 40 crawfish. The crawfish tail meat sells for $13 per package. I bought both.
I picked off a recipe from YouTube showing me how to cook crawfish etoufee. I thawed out the box of crawfish and peeled the meat from each tail. I then followed the recipe and made a pot of the stew. It doesn’t taste as good as how the French Quarter’s make it but it will do. I plan to use a ladle and spoon it over hot steaming rice. At $7 per pound and 3 pounds worth of crawfish, this can get expensive. I think I will drive out to Canmore every so often instead.
