If you have visited our cruise supplier lately, you would notice cruises leaving for the Mediterranean in the month of May are dirt cheap. In some cases, you can cruise for as little as $599 for 7 nights. I was seriously looking at one cruise leaving from Barcelona, Spain on Costa Cruises. An inside cabin on the Costa Magica ship was only $666 and included ports like Marseille, Savona, Naples, Palemo, Tunis and Palma de Mallorca.

I usually like cruises that start and finish in one city. In this case, it will be Barcelona. The reason I like it this way is because it is easier and more economical to plan. You simply need a (RT) roundtrip flight into Barcelona. The alternative is when a ship sails out of one port and sails into another port. In this case, you will need an open-jaw ticket that flies from your home city to point A then when your cruises finishes, you will fly from point B to your home. Most of the time, open-jaw tickets cost more than roundtrip fares.

Another consideration as far as budget is concerned, it is easier to fly into a city and stay a few days either on a pre-cruise package or on your own. When you sail back, you simply head to the airport and fly home. If the other way then you would be tempted to stay a few days on a pre and post cruise holiday because you would have two ports to contend with.

Next time you are planning a cruise, be sure to check whether the ship sails roundtrip or not. To keep costs down, you probably should be looking for cruises that sail around and return to the same port it started from.
